9.2 Reflection: Knowledge of other cultures can help to promote tolerance. What arguments can you offer to support this statement?

  1. Arguments that can support this statement is that if more people know things about different cultures they dont have a reason to be racist, and with the spread of diffusion people will be informed about different cultures as well.

  2. Two hundred years ago, America oppressed, and enslaved the African race in hopes to reduce committing the work themselves, and increasing their productivity. One hundred years later, We still oppressed them and their way of living. It's a dumbfounding topic as to why society resented and segregated the African american community. Truth be told, we hardly knew anything about them. Due to our previous past and ignorance to learn more about another culture, America simply figured African Americans were only slightly more significant then the property they were once claimed to be. Soon, Immigrants from countries all over the globe began to migrate their way to America, causing a substantial increase in society's population and unification of so many different ethnicities. Information diffused among the population, and newly founded knowledge of many cultures began to be discovered. Racism began to subside, as a new understanding for the African American community began to uphold. Sadly, however racism is continuingly corrupting our society. Perhaps it will never subdue, but the Diffusion of ideas, beliefs, and culture takes a toll on tolerance. The more we understand, the more we can accept.

  3. An argument that can support this is that if more people know about a specific culture they are able to learn and understand why people do the things they do and as a result people wouldn't have to be racist toward others because they will understand that everyone is different for a reason.

  4. Knowledge of other cultures can help promote tolerance because if we know more about a culture, we don't have any reason to make fun of them for not understanding them. The spread of this knowledge in the world will help decrease racism and ethnocentrism across the globe, making the world more peaceful.

  5. If people knew about different cultures I'm sure they would be more open to learn about all different kinds of customs. They could discuss about each of there religions, and maybe there would be less racism. They would then find out why each cultures do certain things.

  6. The society in which we live is filled with ignorance. People judge people by not only their culture, but by their race, ethnicity, and religion. Getting to know what others practice can help you become aware of all the diversity that surrounds everyone in their daily lives. Knowing about other cultures will give you tolerance and change your arrogance of thinking your culture is the standard by which to judge all others. Another argument to support this statement is, gaining knowledge about other cultures. Subculture is a group of people who share certain beliefs, values, and customs. The key word, certain, indicates that not all of the beliefs are the same, allowing the group to gain more knowledge about other cultures that are similar to their own. Diffusion, occurs when customs and ideas move with people from one place to another. This promotes tolerance as well creating different cultures to live near one another, allowing new ideas to flourish into the community. A last remaining promoter of tolerance in having knowledge of other cultures is technology. The knowledge of other cultures through technology really helps us notice that many of our cultures have a lot of similarities. Ethnocentrism really comes down to the fact that arrogance and selfishness is what causes certain groups of people to not accept what other cultures believe in. With the help of subculture, diffusion, and technology, the knowledge of other cultures can help promote tolerance for all.

  7. If people understand each other to full potential there would be a great amount of tolerance. If you understand the other culture you can agree or disagree with their ideas or beliefs. Also if the knowledge of other cultures can lessen the amount of racism.

  8. Knowledge of other cultures does promote tolerance. A lot of people are scared by the unknown and there is much racism because we don't know about people's cultures and we think that we are better to help us feel better. But if we knew more about a culture would would know all about it and not be scared of the unknown and learn about their different religion and customs.

  9. If people new the cultures out there they would be more tolerant. People could learn the cultures and understand what people believe in. There would be less racism in the world if this would happen. Then people would understand why people do certain things.

  11. Knowledge of other cultures can help promote tolerance, because when we learn more about other cultures we can understand their different ideas and not focus on our own. Diffusion helps this by spreading all of the different ideas and customs between different people. We are able to change our thoughts because of this and I think it is a very good thing so we aren't ganging up on people without a reason.- Jessica Smith period 1

  12. It's important to know other cultures because it can lead to tolerance. Racism would be unheard of. Knowledge of other cultures leads to respect and thought for other culture's beliefs. The other culture can have a good point and you might want to follow some of their values too. Ethocentrism would decrease because of the knowledge.

  13. The reason there is racism and ethnocentrism is because we don't actually understand a culture. We think they are different, so they must be wrong. We don't know them. So, by actually knowing them we understand them and their reasons for being different. It is like the native americans, they were different, so they were wrong. We tried to change them. But we didn't know them, all we knew was that they were different. Just by understanding a culture, this can all change. We won't jump to conclusions, and we will be able to tolerate them.

  14. Knowledge of other cultures can help promote tolerance because knowing a different culture makes you understand it, thus creating less racism. It also provides respect for other culture's and shows that other races can be just like your own culture. The tolerance between any culture will be heightened greatly and ethnocentrism, as well as racism will be extinct.

  16. An argument that supports the idea that knowledge of other cultures helps supports tolerance is that the more people know about different cultures throughout the world, the less reason they have to fear them. People often fear the unknown so if they could pick up knowledge of other cultures than they would not seem so strange and foreign and they would most likely be more tolerant.

  17. One example is when Chinese first started immigrating into America. We knew nothing about them, besides the fact that they worked on the railroads and were good at it. They kept their culture in their small little china towns and noa American was interested enough to examine and spread and explain what they were doing. We enforced laws making it difficult for the chinese to continue immigrating. Now, we understand their culture, study it in classes like these and accept them for who they are. We "tolerate" them.

  18. To support the statement that knowledge of other cultures can help to promote tolerance, you could use many reasons. One thing is, knowing one religion or culture, can help understand why people do certain things. Just like the book said, the Chinese don't look people in the eyes, they think that is rude; meanwhile, here in America, it is rude NOT to look people in the eyes. Instead of getting mad at the other person, if we knew about there culture/beliefs, we would know that it is part of their culture, and we should respect that and not get mad about it. That way we can tolerate the other culture and understand them.

  19. there are many different ways you can argue to support the knowledge of culture. some ways are that if u study other cultures it will explain y people worship other gods, eat different types of food, where different types of clothing, celebrate holidays, and speak a certain language. it can also help the understanding of why people are from a certain religion. you can also learn the history of it. it may also reduce racism against many religions/cultures.

  20. Knowledge of other cultures can help to promote tolerance. For example, if you do not agree with a religion's technique of praying to their god, instead of immediately dismissing the idea, ask questions to better understand the reasoning. Understanding a culture can further your appreciation and tolerance. Studying a culture is a good way to respect another's beliefs.

  21. There are some arguments that help support the statement of knowledge of other cultures can help promote tolerance. If people understand someone's culture, they will be more comfortable with their ways and enjoy and maybe take part in their customs. If someone understands someone's culture this will eliminate a possibility of racism or ethnocentrism.

  22. When people know more about a culture they can prevent themselves from being rude. When people understand, they feel comfortable and can enjoy others customs. People will also be most likely to not be racist or ethnocentrism because when you know more you understand more.
    ~Sammie Steinberg

  23. Knowledge about another culture can make people more tolerant of that culture because the more informed you are about the reasons and thoughts of a cultures beliefs, the more you will accept them. This is true because once people understand the true meaning behind a culture's beliefs they will realize how much it means to the culture and people itself.

  24. Everyone should realize that there is no reason that people should be racist because everyone has there diffrent cultures, beliefs, and customs.

  25. One reason knowledge of other cultures promote tolerance is since people realize and understand the other beliefs of different cultures they might not want to think that their culture is better.

  26. Knowledge of other cultures promotes tolerance because it helps you judge other cultures more equally. When someone thinks that their culture is the best, they probably don't have experience with other cultures.

  27. Many times people of two different cultures can get along just fine. But sometimes, cultural differences can even cause wars like the Palestine/Israel situation. Having knowledge of other cultures helps us understand customs and traditions of others and be more tolerant.

  28. Knowledge promotes tolerance because it helps understand others' ways and therefore not being scared of their ways and then being against them.

  29. Knowledge promotes tolerance by helping you understand that an open mind is a good thing because people's ideas and ways they see things are different from everyone else's ways of thinking. With knowledge and maturity you become open to other ways, which makes you more tolerant.

  31. Ignorance is the root of intolerance. When people are introduced to something that they don't understand or that contradicts their beliefs, they automatically believe that its wrong and start ti hate it. If people were well informed, they wouldn't have a reason to dislike it as they understood it.
    -Haley

  32. Intolerance is because of the lack of knowledge about the other cultures. We have never reached out to see how the other cultures are just as important as ours. Religious differences have been the root of conflict in many countries. If people were to take a look out of their boundaries they would find not everything is how it seems and some cultures are very misunderstood.

  33. An argument supporting this statement would be that if people learn more about others cultures, it could lead to them better understanding that person and their way of life. This could lead to tolerance because if people did take the time to understand others, they might become less racist.
