Africa has many resources that are scattered throughout the continent inconsistently. Europeans thought Africa would be a great place to take over because of the rich land and natural goods. Racist people kidnapped some African Americans that were first taken by other African Americans. Slavery began and trade increased. New empires such as Ghana and Mali arose, but soon declined. Mansa Musa and Askia Muhammed spread Islamic culture throughout the lands. Europeans fought for power over the African Americans and divide their lands since they didn't think the Africans were a threat. At the Berlin Conference, the French, German, Portuguese, and several other powers separated the lands into their own territories. Africans resisted and European leaders used military forces in the Congo Free State. African nationalism increased and Pan-Africanism was strengthened. Guerrilla warfare was used to push the Europeans out. Slowly and gradually abolitionists stopped the slave trade and Africans fought their way through freedom through words. Economic difficulties weakened their organization as well as their health. AIDS took the lives of many Africans and debt caused problems for Africa. Men were in charge, but women are now starting to earn some political power.
In and out of class I learned many interesting things about Africa that I never knew. First I never knew how slave trade really started but in class i learned that their was a high demand for workers so Europeans captured Africans and took them into slavery. Another fact i learned about Africa was, at one point almost all of Africa was taken over by European countries. Last thing that I learned was Africa is mostly made up by the tropics and is hot all year round.
I learned that Europeans really wanted to take over Africa because of all the great things they have. Africa has minerals and other natural materials that are great for trading and usage in everyday life. Leaders of other countries met to work together to take over Africa, and African leaders were not present to hear the debate and plan. Slavery was used for different things, and people were captured to be sold into slavery. The Europeans wanated all the good things that the Africans had, and they were willing to do almost anything (including capture as many people as they could) to gain control of it. ~Jenny Stein
When Africa was colonized by the Europeans, they were treated poorly and harshly. The Europeans were only in it for their benefit, no one elses. They carried AIDs and other diseases to Africa, and also brought militaristic weapons. These weapons sparked an interest in Africans to have modern technology. This desire caused empires to trade their own people for the technonlogy, starting the slave trade. ~Sabrina Solley
In Africa, there are many different places and climates where goods can be found and harvested for a profit. The only problem with doing so is being able to gain control of the land and keeping control. Since the profitible places are all in different areas of Africa, different groups of people would be controling what goods come out and what comes in.
Europeans didn't want the interior of Africa until they knew it was valuable. They then expected to march right in and control everything, well they did, pretty much. They controlled Africans, putting them into slavery and trading them, they controlled government, decisions, during the Berlin Conference, noncolered people divided up all of africa without one African there. Racism had broken out and so had apartheid. The slave trade became a huge industry and trade because people began to depend on the Africans' labor and work. -katrina kerns

Also, i learned that Europeans really wanted to take over Africa because of all the great things they have. Africa has minerals and other natural materials that are great for trading and usage in everyday life.
I learned that in Africa, there are 4 major climate regions. All of the different places in Africa have different temperatures, humidity, and plant life. Also, I learned that there was a lot of dispute over what the borders for the countries in Africa would be. I learned that the colonization by Europe was a big dispute over the borders and how to be run, but in the long run, breaking it up worked out very well for the continent. I have learned so much good knowledge about Africa in the last week.
When the Europeans colonized Africa, they just destroyed Africa. The Europeans took the Africans as slaves and scattered them through out the world without their family and very harsh conditions. Then the Europeans started splitting up the land, without any African tribe present in making decisions. Then the native people were controlled by the Europeans in colonies. When the Europeans left, they just left Africa poor and stricken with disease.
I learned that africa was colonized by Europe for a very long time. I also learned about africa's scattered resources. It was very interesting to learn how different africa's culture is compared to our's.
I learned how diverse Africa is. From its countries, climate zones, and unevenly distributed resources Africa is a very diverse place. I also learned how when the Europeans colonized, they changed the counties, culture, and economy, and political system of he diverse continent.
Africa has 4 major climate zones. The europeans longed to colonize Africa for it's many valuable resources scattered throughout the continent, such as gold, diamonds, and salt. However, the europeans were far more advanced in their weaponry and technology, and easily overtook the Africans. The slave trade soon began and millions of Africans were shipped everseas, died on the middle passage, were very cruely treated by their owners, and never saw their family again. -Haley
I learned several things. Africa has 4 major climate zones. Most of Africa is in the tropics. The natural resources are unevenly distributed. Also, Africa is all a plateau. We learned of its land forms too. For Europeans, I now understand what started the slave trade. Portuguese explorers were mapping the coast of West Africa in order to find a sea route around it. Of course, the slave trade didn't start right away, first they actually traded. Then the slave trade started. I also know that Europeans started colonizing Africa. But, after World War 2, the countries of Africa started gaining independence from European nations. -Jarrod Schnapper
When Europeans colonized Africa, they destroyed the natural life of it as well. They exploited its natural resources, tyrannized its aboriginal people through slavery and racism, as well as making very unnatural borders, splitting up the continent.
Africa is filled with pros and cons. The unique geography filled with animals, climate zones, topography, and culture make it all the more interesting. Although parts of Africa have been apart of leaching, when the rain washes away the nutrients from the soil, much of the land is very fertile and beneficial for farming. Because Africa had, and has, so much to improve on, such as fertile land, natural resources, and fresh minds to spread ideas through, the Europeans thought it was a good idea to colonize it and call it their own. With the Europeans 'taking over,' by capturing African Americans and making them slaves, trading products, and spreading their religious values, they began their first steps in colonizing Africa. Empires rose and fell along with many lives of the African Americans because of the unfortunate circumstances slaves lived with. Culture was spread and power was fought for, along with the division of the land. Even though the land was owned by Africans, the Europeans did not allow them to take part in any of the decisions. The German, French, Portuguese, and other ethnicities attended the Berlin Conference, determining who would have what. Europeans were very harsh to the Africans. Pan-Africanism grew and patriotic principles increased. Independent groups filled with small bands of fighters, guerrilla warfare, pushed Europeans and other powers away. Not only did the Europeans kill off the Africans by working them to death, but the travel of disease from European countries to Africa got many sick and often resulted in death. Economic downfall caused problems as well. Ending on a positive note, technology advanced and many learned new concepts of life. Also, different races were able to relate and live together. You could relate these events to the fact that, what comes up, must come down and there is nothing anyone can do about it, no cycle breaking this time!
When Europeans colonized Africa, they destroyed much of the African culture. Not only did they ruin the natural life of the continent, but they made the people into slaves. They also spread diseases among the Africans.
Africa has many natural resources that are not evenly distributed throughout the continent. MAny african nations have little to no natural resources and it is very hard for these nations to get by. They are often in constant poverty. When the Europeans began imperializing Africa they destroyed the African way of life and the traditional African culture. The affects of imperialism on Africa by the Europeans were not all bad. They introduced new technology, a market economy, and many other things that many Africans had never heard of.
As Europeans colonized Africa, they native culture became less and less and natural landforms and resources were being destroyed. Europeans brought many aspects of their life with them to Africa. Aside from disease, they brought new technology and an economy based on money instead of trading. Also, they took advantage of the Africans and made them into slaves.

The colonization of Africa by Europeans changed Africa greatly. There were 2 kinds of rule. They were direct and indirect rule. Europeans required Africans to pay taxes using money instead of goods. Europeans build roads and set up telegraphs for a new way of transportation and communication for Africa. Europeans set up schools for Africans. Europeans sold Africans into slavery to work and so Europeans could make money. -Emma Spellman
When the europeans colonized Africa they took control and destroyed its culture. They were cruel to the Africans. The Europeans killed Africans with diseases. The main reason for colonization is for wealth. Which they got from some of Africa's resources.
I learned that when the europeans colonized africa they treated the africans horribly. Many africans were killed constantly by disease and murder. The europeans mainly colonized africa for wealth since many parts of africa are rich in resources.
The european colonization of Africa would have probably resulted in total loss of many African cultures had it not been for WWII. Many Africans died of disease and violence of Europeans.

Africa was a very poor country that needed medical care and was extremely unsanitary. The slave trade the Europeans started used Africans to become their slaves. Also, Europeans used Africa's resources including gold and salt. The slave trade, however, caused a great diaspora, which caused the spread of African cultures.
After the Europeans colonized Africa I saw a lot of change in how harshly the Africans were being treated and how they believed them to be cannibals and were considered useless if they did not work. Slave trade was even worse when they had to sit side by side like sardines and had barely any food. So altogether i learned that Africans were not treated as well as they should have.
